The similarities between Fahrenheit 451 and Equilibrium are amazing. Both are set in the future and both have characters that are walking talking robots. Montag’s wife is so focused on her television that she doesn’t seem to be living. In the movie Christian Bale’s children seem to be zombies. They rarely smile or laugh or frown, therefore we can never tell what they are thinking. In Equilibrium emotions are what the society frowns upon and anything that sets off an emotion must be destroyed. They believe that emotions are the foundation of evil. In 451, books are the foundation of evil and they must also be destroyed. The society forbids individual thinking. Both pieces include people that are going against what society wants and people that are main “destroyers”. Also in both 451 and Equilibrium it only takes one person to make a difference.

“I sometimes think drivers don’t know what grass is, or flowers, because they never see them slowly. If you showed a driver a green blur, Oh yes! he’d say, that’s grass! A pink blur! That’s a rose garden! White blurs are houses. Brown blurs are cows. My uncle drove slowly on a highway once. He drove forty miles an hour and they jailed him for two days.” page 9 —- This is what Clarisse told Montag in the beginning of the novel. This is an example of an idea Bradbury was trying to portray. The society Montag lives in doesn’t appreciate things such as objects, surroundings, and communication. People don’t think and that’s what the quote shows. Instead of taking the time out to understand what is happening around them they live in this shallow society where analyzing things is looked down upon. I read Fahrenheit 451 in 10th grade, however, we didn’t look into Bradbury’s style of writing, language or our opinions on the novel itself. Second time around it was much more enjoyable since digging to find deeper meaning helps the reader have more appreciation for the reading.

“Am I a perfect fool?” she thought to herself. “Am I really just an idiot, gaping with love for him? How COULD I? How could I? The very way he says: ‘Yes, dear!’ to her! The way he does what she tells him! The way he fidgets about the room with his hands in his pockets! The way he goes off when she sends him away because she wants to talk to me. And he knows she wants to talk to me. And he knows what she MIGHT have to say to me. Yet he goes off on his errand without a question, like a servant. ‘ I will do whatever you wish darling’. He must have said those words time after time to the little lady. And fulfilled them, also. Performed all his pledges and his promises. —– I chose this section because I believe the author purposely mentioned this to give the reader an idea of Hannele’s feelings. Although it seems that she is thinking this to turn herself off from her feelings for the captain, I believe these qualities make her more attracted to him. What female wouldn’t want a man to grant their every wish and do as they say? The exclamations at the end of every statement makes it seem as though she is jealous and wishing that it was her that he was so generous to. Hannele repeating his remarks he made to his wife is like a child imitating a person when they are mad. I see this more as envy than disgust.

After reading the first half of the story, I have to say it is very interesting. The characters are described very well and given a lot of depth even though we don’t know much about their past. The whole story is either a dialogue or describing the characters behavior and movement or the environment. I love how we get every detail of the surroundings and the interactions between Hannele and Captain Hepburn. Although the characters are described, there is still mystery behind them. I find a lot of what the captain says as very contradicting and sometimes it seems as if he was just talking without thinking. When he was explaining the relationship he has with his wife compared to Hannele it sounds like he’s confused and the more he tried to explain it the more confused we can tell he is. I am interested to see what the future holds for the captain and Hannele, and where his wife and family fit in.

I am really unsure of the purpose of this writing by T. S Eliot. It didn’t keep my attention and I found a lot of his points repetitive. It seems that he used a lot of unnecessary information to try to get his points across. The only point he made that I was interested in was when he was explaining the idea that art is formed by a combination of feelings and emotions. Feelings are needed for the creation of the art (whatever type of art it is), and emotions are created in the readers mind. It is somewhat like a cause and effect. His writing just seems to be criticism on the way readers react to certain pieces and what was intended by the creator.

After reading the first few chapters, I am already more interested in reading this compared to some other stories. I feel that the author wasted no time in the beginning to draw the reader in. The characters have depth to them and the setting plays a role in the story. It’s easy to know what the charaters are feeling since the physical and emotional descriptions are good. Sometimes it seems that Lilia has a soft side ( her use of the handkerchief at times), yet at other times it seems she doesnt really care enough to show emotion. If the story ended after chapter 4, I would be really confused and full of questions. I want to find out what is going to happen with Gino and the baby, and also what everyones reaction is to Lilias death.
